Message from Office of Safety and Youth Development

In aligning with our Chancellor’s priorities we are excited to share our new resource that speaks to the work we provide to schools in advocating, nurturing, and sustaining a school culture and instructional program conducive to student learning and staff professional growth.

NYCDOERestorativePractices.org , demonstrates through videos, forum and reflection sheets-  questions for students, parents and teachers/administrators- the tools our educators use to help prevent conflicts before they arise, better manage incidents in the moment, and restore/improve the culture of their classrooms and schools through collaboration with faculty and community members.

School and community stakeholders are encouraged to see themselves as active members of their school communities, taking ownership of their own school cultures and leadership roles to encourage a more positive, inclusive, and welcoming environment for their peers.

Restorative Practices have been recognized to reduce suspension rates, increase school attendance, and reduce disproportionality for our marginalized students. Restorative Practices promotes the success of every student by ensuring management and resources for a safe, efficient, and effective learning environment through: capacity building to promote learning and improving practice; sustainability through continuance and meaning beyond the present moment;instructional programming in delivering  of high quality curriculum; and school culture by addressing attitudes, knowledge, behaviors and beliefs that characterize the school environment and are shared by its stakeholders.
