WORLD LANGUAGES (WL)

Our World Language courses promote language proficiency, social development and cross-cultural opportunities. Our curriculum is thematic and uses a communicative approach, aligned with NYSED World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages. The World Languages Department offers the following courses: Spanish 1-4 or Mandarin 1-4, Pre-AP Spanish/Mandarin, and Advanced Placement Spanish Language and Culture (SUNY Albany Course) and Advanced Placement Chinese Language and Culture (for college credit). Our Advanced Placement courses are equivalent to intermediate-level college courses.

As a requirement for high school credit, all students must earn at least 2 credits for a Local/ Regents Diploma. Students must pass a World Language exam with a grade of 65 or higher, and earn 6 credits for an Advanced Regents Diploma. Most of our students continue their World Language studies through Senior year in order to complete the requirements for the Seal of Biliteracy in Spanish/Mandarin. The Seal of biliteracy is an award granted to students who have studied and attained proficiency in two or more languages by high school graduation.
